Document legalisation in Benin
Visa, studies, marriage or a company abroad: your Beninese documents often need to be legalised before they are accepted. We identify the right chain and make every submission for you.
Consular legalisation certifies the signature and seal on a document, step by step, until it is recognised by the destination country. For a Beninese document the usual chain is: authentication of the signature by the competent authority where required, legalisation by Benin's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then legalisation by the destination country's embassy or consulate accredited to Benin.
Every embassy has its own rules: forms, appointments, fees, ID to provide and turnaround times. A mistake at any step can cost several weeks. We prepare the file, make the submissions and follow each step through to collection.
In the other direction, a foreign document intended for a Beninese authority generally needs to be legalised by the Beninese embassy or consulate responsible for the issuing country. Our international network handles that in the same way.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between legalisation and an apostille?
An apostille is a single formality between Hague Convention countries. Legalisation is a chain of several certifications (ministry, then embassy) used when one of the countries is not a member, which is currently the case for Benin.
Do I need to come to Cotonou?
Usually not. You hand over your documents (in person, by courier or by post) and we take care of the formalities. Some embassies do require you in person for other procedures, such as a visa application.
Does the translation need to be legalised?
Some countries require it, others don't. We check the receiving organisation's requirements and schedule the translation before or after the original is legalised accordingly.
